Ongoing growth in e-commerce has fundamentally changed the nature of retail distribution. The traditional supply chain model of the RDC distributing pallets and cases to retail outlets; where cases are opened and stocked onto shelves for selection by shoppers, is now merely one option in an omni-channel environment.

Consumer expectations are now pushing selection activity, the item picking at time of purchase, back into the distribution centre.  The result is an explosion in orders to be to be fulfilled, usually on the same day as the order is received. And yet the customer expects to pay almost the same for the service.

Faced with an SKU range up to 10 times that of which is offered in-store, many existing logistics operations can no longer meet the demands of their retail business. Possibly most critical of all, the distribution centre is now directly connected to the consumer and responsible for maintaining customer satisfaction.
